AACTA AWARDS - FESTIVAL CONVERSATIONS - GREEN SHOOTS
SUBURBAN WILDLIFE a “narrative of queer longing and love” considers where freedom intersects with consequence, pressure, denial, accessibility and responsibility. The understated and beautifully layered performances and script come together deliciously, and the extreme discipline of subtlety reinforces a stringent commitment to truth. My investment was such that I felt everything just as strongly as those overly dramatic movie moments we’ve been taught to expect…slash crave. In many cases, within these films the climax was an actual climax, sensual or sexual in nature, and it didn’t make the structure any less poignant. Just as the accrual of a long-desired bird tattoo on the inner arm felt just as meaningful as any curtain-closing finale with all the bells and whistles.

LONDON AUSTRALIAN FILM FESTIVAL - SUBURBAN WILDLIFE REVIEW
Suburban Wildlife was shot over fourteen days in February 2017, in between McCluskey’s second and third year at the Australian Film, Radio and Television School, for a tiny budget of A$4000, partly raised through crowdfunding. You can excuse a few rough edges given the circumstances of the film’s making – handheld camerawork is overdone here and there - but this is a film which doesn’t need many excuses. It’s an accomplished feature debut....It’s insightful, often funny, sticks in the mind afterwards, and definitely confirms Imogen McCluskey as a name to watch.

SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL 2019 REVIEW
"Imogen McCluskey’s feature debut, Suburban Wildlife, is an enveloping account of millennial despondency. The moment that you realise you’re watching something with key generational insight is as Priscilla Doueihy’s Alice delivers a despondent thought about travelling the world to be enriched. Alice says, to paraphrase, how could I possibly go anywhere my parents haven’t been..."

FILM IN REVOLT - INTERVIEW WITH IMOGEN MCCLUSKEY / SUBURBAN WILDLIFE
August 25, 2018
"It was really important to Bea and I to not just make another Girls (2012-2017). I hope we did that in our film, across all our characters." - Imogen McCluskey
